Ben von Mahler began his career as a corporate photographer but preferred to work more spontaneously and transitioned to the fashion industry. His work has been used in numerous print publications and websites.

Wanting to expand his knowledge of lighting and photography, he joined Playboy Enterprises Inc. He was responsible for positioning the complex and intricate studio and location lighting set-ups for numerous Playboy publications. The techniques he learned there along with others he developed have been used throughout his photographic career to enhance his images and add a sophisticated atmosphere to his work.

In the late 90’s he created a website for high end Italian women’s apparel. As a result of the emphasis on the Italian couture featured on the website, in 2001 he was invited to the Venetian Hotel in Las Vegas to photograph five Italian collections in their Presidential suite. This was the first anniversary of the Venetian Hotel and numerous stars including Sophia Loren, Robin Leach, Dexter Poindexter, chefs Wolfgang Puck and Emeril Lagasse attended the gala affair. Portions of the shoot featuring von Mahler were aired on Oprah Winfrey’s Oxygen Channel.

In 2009 he began developing his highly stylized artwork. Morphing his images into layered compositions combining exquisite female models and exotic scenes he created from around the world, he developed a new and distinct style of artwork.

Not satisfied with using paper or canvas to support his artwork, he set out to create his own media of exotic backgrounds and textures. His customized media, from toned hand made Sanskrit paper to crushed fabrics, papers, plaster and acrylics embedded on canvas enhanced the work and provided depth to his imagery. This combining of techniques formed the perfect backdrop to his multifaceted compositions.

Concurrently he developed storylines for many of his artworks. Drawing from his academic background he utilized many of the powerful and intriguing women throughout time to bring intense insight and intellectual complexity to his creations.

He refers to the complex amalgamation of techniques as “Mahlerizing” or the “Mahlerization of art”.

Ben von Mahler was born in Washington D.C., moving first to Maryland and then to California. He received his formal art training at Otis Art Institute of Parsons School of Design, currently known as the Otis College of Art and Design, and Art Center.

He resides in Thousand Oaks, California.
